Phi Truong consulted with me on the situation. It does seem like the disk is
bad.

A 400MB disk is not sufficient to hold a stable version of the OS with any
utility software, so a 1GB disk would be the best alternative. I would suggest
that we have my student look into it and see if he can reformat the drive and
make it work. He's quite good at what he does and probably knows considerably
more than Phi about SGI systems. I would offer my assistance, but time has been
rediculous for me. I have an offer in progress for an SGI Sys Admin, but that
person will likely not start until mid April.

The reason for that answer is unclear, however, even with the 30 day grace
period the coverage would be expired. I am in the process of trying to
straighten out the Varsity Program -- too many staff changes, I guess -- so
I'll keep this in mind when I come to yuor system.

We usually purchase large disks (9GB or so) and 1GB disks have not been
purchased for SGI systems in a couple of years. I don't think I can give you a
definitive answer, but you might try calling Terry Lewis at Purchasing to see
where the latest 1GB drives have been purchased. SGI seems to use Seagate
drives quite a bit. Micropolis drives are also good.
