I get the sense that freeware is now lagging the commercial market, in terms 
of available features.  

As I understand it, Tripwire is more up-to-date than COPS.  ISS and Netect 
(among others, I'm sure) make "host security" software.  There are a number 
of commercial port scanners on the market, including ISS, Ballista and others.

I'm sure there are lots of other vendors out there.  Hopefully, there is 
some robust freeware, as well.
