IDS newbie

My interest in IDS is as a sys adm who may be assigned to manage our
orgnization's Internet connection. I expect an IDS to be a tool to provide
both alerts and assurances. I'm trying to expand my knowledge in the broad
field of Internet security and expect to learn something from participating
(mostly lurking 8#) in this mailing list.
