Well, that certainly was a long introductory message...
Consider this my introduction. I am David Wiseman, Network Manager for the
Computer Science Department at The University of Western Ontario in London,
Canada (the OTHER London). While our systems are less tightly controlled than
some sites, we still have our troubles with intruders. I have spent a lot more
of my time in tracking and dealing with these people that I really wanted to.
Right now we have no good Intrustion Detection System except for wide-awake
sysadmins. Unfortunately, we aren't always awake. My interest is thus in
inexpensive and effective ways to recognize the presense of an intruder in
an environment which is moderately insecure (ok, open). Once we know we've got
one, we're getting good at dealing with them, but spotting them can be
difficult.
