I think (IMHO ofcourse) that having certified personel is a good thing, but
their expertese will normally be dependant on how good the certification
is (ie how good the certification program is will determine how good the
personnel are that are certified (for the most case, there are
exceptions)). i think its a little too early in the computer security game
to have people certified for one system or another. i think the best setup
would be like a normal university degree, ie core subjects with a certain
number of elective subjects requiring a major. core subjects would include
(encryption, monitoring/logging, network security theory, operating system
security theory etc et al). the elective subjects would include things of
more esoteric nature, and more practical nature (ie UNIX system security,
Ethernet secrity, etc et al). of course some of these subjects are rather
limited right now, but they could either be beefed up, or combined with
other related subjects. given this frame work i think there is enough to
learn about computer security out there to easily encompass a 3/4 year
university degree.
